iLGM Leadership seminar held in Mpumalanga: 19 October 2010

The Institute for Local Government Management of South Africa (iLGM) in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Gert Sibande District Municipality and Vodacom held a successful iLGM Leadership Seminar in Secunda on 19 October 2010. There was a targeted audience of more than 200 stakeholders drawn from across the Province of Mpumalanga. Admission thereto was free of charge in view of the generosity of the three organisations that partnered with iLGM.

SOLACE Annual Conference 2010

450 RDP houses to be constructed soon in Kokstad

The Greater Kokstad Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal announced recently that it will be constructing 450 low-cost houses for the community of Franklin to the tune of R50 million, this after municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi brokered a deal with Spoornet for the lucrative development estimated at 30 hectares for a mere R1. Spoornet further made a commitment of R2 million for the rehabilitation of the water treatment plant. This comprises a total of 18 portions consisting of 30 houses, storage sheds and pieces of undeveloped land.

Municipalities' funding systems need make-over

The current formula of funding for municipalities is flawed, unsustainable, and requires immediate review if the developmental imperatives of the country are to be met. "There is a need to review the entire fiscal support system provided to municipalities and there is also a need for members of Parliament to engage more robustly with the Fiscal and Financial Commission (FFC)," Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Sicelo Shiceka said recently.

Customers given lifeline on municipal debt

Indebted Ekurhuleni residents who have been struggling with their monthly municipal accounts can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has introduced a six-month interest waiver scheme starting from October until the end of March 2011.
